A Musical Medley To Get You In The Mood For The Holidays: Which Tunes Are On Your Playlist?

When is the appropriate time to turn on the Christmas tunes? I know people that have Mariah Carey blaring out of their car stereo from early November, while others that refuse to listen to anything that resembles Chris Rea until they're actually Driving Home For Christmas. Me? I'm firmly somewhere in the middle. I like to pop on some classic tunes while I'm prepping for festive content to help get me in the spirit, but it's not until my tree is up (usually within the first couple of days of December) that I start to properly phase out Busted for a touch of Bublé. I do find it fascinating that our music tastes change so rapidly, and the mainstream charts are never filled with the same style from one year to the next, but when it comes to holiday music we turn to the same tunes that have been making us smile for decades. Maybe it's the nostalgia associated with a certain song, the emotions that come to the surface when popping on the CD that's only played once a year, or the fact that festive music transcends generations, tastes and musical styles - we all have our all-time favourites that we turn to time and time again. In the interests of sharing, here's what I turn to every year without fail...

MICHAEL BUBLE: CHRISTMAS
It's not Christmas without a bit of Bublé. His super smooth and timeless voice ensure he can compete with the best of the classic crooners, while giving some of the oldest tunes a modern twist. You can't help but have a little bop along when this comes on the stereo system.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHRISTMAS
The ultimate compilation album that includes every single one of the tunes we all know and love in one place. From Wizard and Slade, to Band Aid and Paul McCartney, with a sprinkling of Bing Crosby and a touch of The Darkness, it's the CD you'll want to pop on to really get you in the spirit of Christmas.

MARIAH CAREY: MERRY CHRISTMAS
I'm old enough to remember when 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' was actually in the charts, but twenty plus years later it's like it hasn't aged a day. This CD includes that incredibly famous track alongside some classic carols that Mariah warbles her way through; your mum would approve.

DISNEY'S CHRISTMAS FAMILY FAVOURITES
A bit of a random choice, but we had this on CD when I was a child and it still makes me deliriously happy. Who doesn't want to hear Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald sing you the Twelve Days of Christmas? It's not just for the kids, I promise.

KYLIE: CHRISTMAS
The little pop princess that never seems to age teamed up with some famous voiced for this modern take on festive tales - including Iggy Pop, James Corden, Mika and her sister Dannii. The result is fast-paced and fun tunes that make a very current addition to your musical repertoire.

AND THE BONUS ONE... ROBSON & JEROME: ROBSON & JEROME
I know this is slightly left of field, but hold up and let me explain. When I was a whipper-snapper back in 1995, Robson & Jerome were all the rage; their singles topped the charts every year and this was the #1 album on Christmas Day. It was played relentlessly whereever you went, so to me it's become completely entwined with the festive season - even though the songs aren't exactly Christmassy! What's worse is that twenty years later, my Nan still insists on getting it out.

Which one of my favourite Christmas albums do you have a thing for too? Do you have any other guilty pleasures that get dusted off year in and year out?
