SPONSORED FEATUREDid you know that over half* of dry skin sufferers state that their condition worsens during winter months? Even those of us that benefit from relatively healthy looking limbs during the summer are more than likely to experience dryness, flaking or irritation when the colder season sets in. As the temperatures drop, our skin is exposed to a myriad of elements that can leave it looking and feeling dehydrated, sensitive and dry. Bitter winds, central heating, reduced humidity in the air and even lack of sunlight can disrupt the structure of the skin, reducing its water content so it dries out and leaves us feeling somewhat worse for wear. What’s more, our cleansing and bathing regime can also play an unexpected role in causing issues that need to be tackled with specialist skincare. There are some small changes you can make to your routine that will have a big impact overall, helping to keep your skin looking and feeling as healthy and smooth as possible. I've teamed up with E45 and top clinical dermatologist Dr Emma Wedgeworth to find the answers to your problems, having taken to the streets to find out what concerns Brits have with their skin during the colder months.
I spent the day with Dr Emma Wedgeworth to find out her expert tips on how to nourish and protect your dry skin this winter. You can watch the full video below (which provides some very insightful info and top tips even I had no clue about,) but here are her three top tips in brief to keep you looking fab all winter long...
TEMPERATURE CONTROL: "Avoid excessively hot baths and showers as they can contribute to the development or worsening of dry skin. It is also a good idea to turn down the radiators or reduce the thermostat by one or two degrees as warm air can draw moisture from the skin."
POST-SHOWER ROUTINE: "Apply an emollient all over your body before you fully dry yourself. Applying to damp skin helps lock in moisture to protect it against unpredictable changes in the weather. Also, apply moisturiser in the same direction as hair growth; this will help to prevent bumps appearing on the skin that sometimes develop when product is rubbed into hair follicles."
GETTING HANDS ON: "Hands are very susceptible to getting dry and chapped during the winter months as they are often exposed to the harsh wind and the cold. Combine this with frequent hand washing with soaps or harsh detergents and it can easily result in impairment of the skin barrier, causing dryness and irritation. Use an emollient wash instead of your normal soap and a good dermatological hand cream, as often as possible, with cotton gloves at night if necessary. Keep a tube of hand cream in your bag to keep hands hydrated on the go."
E45 has been a firm favourite and household staple for some time - especially as my boyfriend suffers with eczema and uses the products to nourish, hydrate and help soothe his often dry and itchy skin. A fundamental part of our routine is the original E45 Cream, a clinically proven emollient moisturiser suitable for dry and sensitive skin. (Emollients work to create a protective layer which helps to keep moisture within the skin, restore the skin barrier and protect it from irritants and allergens.) Available in a variety of sizes, this lightweight and effective cream is suitable for the whole family. Furthermore, the Emollient Washes & Cleansers are a great alternative to heavily fragranced shower gels as they can help to cleanse the skin without stripping the surface of essential moisture; they're soap free, non-foaming and perfect for sensitive skin types.
One of my favourite products from the E45 range is the Intense Recovery Hand Cream, which intensively nourishes and soothes dry skin to leaving hands feeling instantly softer. The lightweight fragrance-free formula can be applied to hydrate hands throughout the day, absorbing quickly to instantly soothe. The benefits can also be boosted with a touch of E45 Repair & Protect Overnight Hand Cream, a must-have winter skin rescue that helps to enhance skin’s cell repair and regeneration overnight. The fragrance-free, Vitamin B enriched and incredibly nourishing formula helps in the production of cells - so the skin on your hands can 'regenerate' and repair while you sleep. It's one of my favourite launches of 2015 for a reason!
If you suffer from dry, itchy, irritated or dehydrated skin, then it's well worth turning down the heat and investing in some effective non-fragranced and soap-free body products to keep you feeling nourished. E45 is affordable, effective and suitable for everyone - plus the plethora of products available will inevitably meet your every need. Make sure you give the video below a little watch and let me know if it answers some of your burning beauty questions! I know I learned something...
