The New Temporary Hair Trend: Boosting Colour Without 'Dying' Your Hair

The ritual of adding new tones to my hair has been part of my routine since my University days, when I thought stripey yellow highlights were the epitome of high fashion. I've experimented with all kinds of colourants, shades and formats throughout the last fifteen years: moving from mousey brown to brassy blonde, jet black, bold red and finally settling on a chocolate tone that's probably best suited to my complexion. Experimentation is fun, but can be somewhat scary if you've never really battled with a box of home dye. (I never even knew these hair colour virgins existed until recently; my friends and I have always dabbled in home colourants, 'changing it up' at every given opportunity, so for us it's become the norm.) However, a new category is emerging that provides a subtle result while removing the fear factor completely; boosting hair tones is the new trend, helping to create a 'just stepped out of the salon' shine from the comfort of your own bathroom.


Whether you want to enhance your natural colour, boost the tones you've paid a lot of money for, or simply bridge a gap between your next hairdresser appointment, there are so many products and formats now to choose from. Maria Nila is one of my favourite new brands to come out of 2015 so far, offering up a Colour Refresh treatment (£16.99) that's got me really excited. Available in thirteen different tones to suit all hair colours (brunette, blonde, red, platinum, grey and even turquoise!) each bottle contains a nourishing treatment with colour pigments to help refresh hair colour in under ten minutes. Between salon appointments (or simply as a refresh before a big occasion,) this is a really effective way to keep your hair looking and feeling fab with little effort required. I've used it a couple of times (once a week works well for maintenance) and have been pleasantly surprised at the way my hair looks after it's blowdried; there's not a huge difference, but it just gives my colour a boost and ensures the overall look is healthy - rather than looking parched or in need of a trim. Hair is Fabric (£30.00) are another new brand to hit the shelves in 2015, offering a range of colour support cleansing conditioners to ensure your hair looks its best. Available in brunette, blonde, black and red 'support', these cleansers contain pigments which are deposited into the hair to provide a luminous result. As the formula is focused on preserving colour while hydrating and strengthening hair, the result is hair that feels soft and supple. Although this format takes some getting used to and doesn't provide the silky-smooth finish we associate with 'clean' hair, over time colour is boosted in a really gentle way. If you're after a stronger result, then Charles Worthington's new Colour Revive Tinted Mousse (£9.99 and launching July) provides a temporary boost, enriches your natural tones and ensures luminous shine. Applied to washed damp hair, this lightweight foam is brushed through and dried in with a blowdryer to ensure the pigments really 'stick'; it can be used up to three times a week and provides a subtle boost that's great when you know you want to look your best. With a huge portfolio of colour options soon to be available in Boots, this is no doubt going to be a big thing in hair this summer.

Sometimes our hair just starts to look a little lacklustre. Whether its over-styling, root growth, dryness or sun exposure, dull hair is a common beauty problem that many of us are constantly trying to fix. These new products hitting the market definitely feel a need and ensure we can have a good hair day pretty much every day, rather than worrying about bridging the weeks between today's hair dilemma and when you can next afford a trip to the salon. Although they don't work miracles and don't replace the traditional hair colourant (home, salon or otherwise,) they're a great addition to any routine that make looking after your colour super easy. They're affordable, simple to use and provide instant results - even if very subtle. Considering there's been no real innovation in the hair dye market for years, this is a great first step towards our colour looking even more fabulous for longer.

  1. I bought the Maria Nila one after reading your post and I love it - it really does give you hair a boost of colour and it left my hair so soft and healthy looking too. I'll be keeping my eye out for the moose definitely!

  4. Great post! I ave naturally dark hair so I can only go so far in terms of experimenting with hair colour but i do like the idea of adding subtle differences / tones to the hair and these products sounds amazing. I do remember though many years ago i used sun in in my hair and it was awful (never again I don't even know if you still get that stuff!)

  6. These are perfect for bringing out the shine in brunette hair. There was a red conditioner years ago which was great on dark brown hair. I like the temporary solutions as they a great quick fix. I also like the pretty mermaid colours wash in wash out shampoos and chalks.

  8. I do like the look of these new products to either revive or enhance the colour of hair. Many years ago John Frieda did some colour enhancing conditioners which were good.
