LBQ's Advent Calendar: 10th December (WIN 'Perfume' by Karen Gilbert)

‘A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting’ said Christian Dior. Spraying scent is more complex than we could have imagined when it hit the shelves of Selfridges over 100 years ago; picking a perfume is like picking personification bottled. I've always worn fragrance like I wear accessories, waiting until I'm fully dressed before picking a scent to complement my outfit and the mood I'm in. However, with the overflow of celebrity fragrances and endorsements, the art of perfumery has been somewhat lost. So many of us don't understand where our scent comes from, what the 'base' notes actually are, or what fragrance families underpin every scent ever developed. Karen Gilbert fell into the beauty industry by accident, finding herself training in perfumery and working on own label toiletries ranges for companies such as M&S, Boots & Superdrug; she later joined Neal's Yard Remedies and began specialising in aromatherapy oils, which led to her new career as an author of green and natural beauty books. 'Perfume' is a must-have companion for any fragrance enthusiast or beauty lover, and I have a copy to give away on day eleven of #LBQAdvent!

Here's a brief introduction into the book: "At a time when advertising bombards us with the hard sell for the latest celebrity perfumes, fragrance expert Karen Gilbert shows how to create and blend your very own signature scent. Perfume: The Art and Craft of Fragrance introduces us to the psychology of smell and explains how fragrance can influence our moods and behaviour, and gives a brief overview of perfume through the ages. A key chapter teaches you how to train your nose to recognise the five different fragrance families (floral, oriental, citrus, chypre, fougere), and how to identify the top, middle and base notes of a perfume. Once you have understood the basics of how to build a fragrance, learn how to layer scents by creating perfume oils, sprays and solids, plus scented bath and body products and home fragrance sprays from the easy step-by-step recipes."All you have to do to nab this fabulous must-have book for perfume enthusiasts and beauty lovers, is enter using the widget below. Good luck and happy sniffing!
