Using Makeup as a Mood Booster

Many studies have confirmed the simple act of applying make-up can boost your self-esteem, your confidence and leave you with a greater sense of well-being. Whenever I feel tired or lethargic a quick swipe of lipstick can act as an instant mood booster; I also find a bold, bright nail or fresh rosy cheek can have a similar affect. The days are drawing in and it’s not at all uncommon to feel low this time of year, so here are my quick cheats for using make-up as a mood booster this impending Autumn.
makup mood booster
Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Plum Scene (£15.50)Studies have shown wearing red lipstick can boost your mood and leave you feeling energised. I agree that red lipstick is undeniably classic and glamorous, but with my pale and slightly yellow skin tone I struggle to find a shade that warms my complexion. During winter months I like to embrace autumnal colours and wear shades that are tricky to get away with during summer. This aubergine shade from Smashbox is surprisingly versatile and flattering; a must for self-esteem, as a study revealed 75% of women feel better on the inside when they look good on the outside. Tie hair in a topknot and use minimal eye make-up for maximum impact.

Butter London Nail Lacquer in Jaffa (£12.00)
Bold nail varnish is such a great way to add colour to your outfit. I love Butter London as all their products are ‘3 free’ (meaning they don’t contain chemicals that are potentially damaging and commonly found in nail polishes,) plus the range of colours is amazing and incredibly cheerful! To really boost you mood and take you back to sunnier climates, corals and oranges are perfect – a glance at them on a rainy day always puts a spring in my step.

Benefit Rockateur Blush (£23.50)
A bit of colour on the cheeks always gives the impression of health and vitality, even if you’re feeling under the weather; I always find that when my face looks fresh and bright, my confidence soars and my smile bursts. This flattering blush also doubles up as a highlighter so is great for illuminating your cheekbones or temples when you need an extra lift – but go easy, this is strong stuff!

Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine (£19.95)
A bad hair day can be an instant mood killer, yet when your hair feels strong and looks bouncy everything seems a little brighter! This is a great multi-tasking treatment that not only softens without weighing down hair, but also adds an amazing glossy shimmer with no oily residue. This is so glam and always helps me to stand tall when I’m feeling down; it's the perfect mood pick-me-up.

I really believe make-up can be used as a mood-booster: something to be used not to hide behind, but to enhance your confidence. Make-up is a great way to experiment with your look as it’s easy to remove and affordable if you pick wisely. If yellow nail varnishes or fuchsia lips aren’t your normal look, try out cheaper brands first to see how wearable you find them before investing in some more expensive products for better quality – I guarantee they’ll make you chirpier!

I was recently off work for a couple of weeks after a surgery and the simple thing of painting my nails nicely made me feel a lot better in myself!
And now still love a pamper evening air home every now n then!!

  2. Putting on my makeup, dressing up and spraying myself with a gorgeous fragrance set me up for the day and I really believe that if you feel good, you deal with daily little challenges differently as well. Xx

  6. I definitely agree with this. When I was younger, I had this lipgloss which would always cheer me up. Whenever I felt upset or sad, one swipe would get me smiling again. It was strange but it worked haha.

  8. Love the lipstick!
I totally agree though, when I have a nail polish on just that can give me a boost or just a blusher and mascara.
