Keeping skin hydrated is an essential step towards keeping it healthy, particularly as the ingredients can enhance the performance of the upper most layer of the skin. Applying a moisturizer day and night can help lock in moisture and prevent the skin from drying out, as well as keeping skin plump and looking youthful. This layer of the skin contains approximately 30% water, which is essential to maintain so it can continue to protect the layers underneath – without a moisturizer, the skin can be left unguarded and prone to damage.
Thanks to scientific advances, many face creams now contain ingredients that help protect against sun damage, as well as damaging free radicals in the environment that can cause our skin to react negatively. Using a moisturizer is an essential part of any skin routine, as it helps to protect the skin and create a kind of barrier against bacteria that can otherwise enter via ‘cracks’ in the skin.
Even if your skin is oily, it may not contain enough moisture to keep it working effectively. (In fact oily skin is simply a result of over-active glands within the skin’s surface and not as a result of too much moisture.) If you choose the correct moisturizer for your skin, the oil may even become less of a problem if your skin starts working effectively over a longer period of time. Oil doesn’t equal moisture – they’re two completely separate things – so never assume that a face cream will make your situation worse.
If your skin is exceptionally dry, you may also want to use a night cream. Night creams tend to contain high levels of active ingredients, perfect for targeting a specific skin concern, which can really get to work while you sleep. UV rays can break down some ingredients during the day, so night time is the perfect opportunity to put your skin to work. Although it’s much debated, research shows that your skin reacts differently according to your body clock – during the day your skin is busy protecting itself, whereas at night cells focus on repairing themselves from damage. This means you can put on a cream before bed, relax and let the ingredients work their magic while you slumber.
A face cream should be an essential part of your skincare routine, regardless of age or skin type, so make sure you find one that works for you and stick to it.
