London Fashion Week: Reporting Backstage at Yifang Wan

Yifang Wan’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection gave us four colours: emerald, black, silver and cream. Following the monochrome trend that took over last year, the designer seems to have added a twist to the bland colour palette. The colour green, or emerald as everyone backstage described it, seemed to be the main aspect in the collection, with garments containing a variety of dramatic clean cuts, asymmetrics, tailoring, layering and draping. Eye wear was a very prominent accessory, with each model wearing sunglasses that would have left them almost blinded if it wasn’t for the well-lit catwalk. Walking in a straight line was way more challenging than usual here.

As Yifang Wan had very structured pieces in her collection, the Toni & Guy team used the hair to soften the look of the models. 'Pyramid' was the shape used to describe the subtle hairstyle, due to the fact that it was flat on the top but gained more volume as the hair came down over the shoulders. Although a simple hairstyle to a mere onlooker, it was quite hard work to transform the shape and maintain the volume, aided by their Triple Barrel Waver. Like the hair, the make-up of the models was subtle and full of nude colours. The head make-up artist for The Body Shop, Claire De’Graft, decided to either use a BB Cream or a Mineral Foundation to keep the result natural, depending on the skin type of the model. Although a highlighter was used to create that summer shine, the makeup was kept very minimal and natural. Yifang Wan gave us more colour for S/S 2014; the use of emerald was an exciting twist to her well known use of monochrome and combined with her harsh cuts and draping, the collection looked a well-deserved success.
