Top Tips: Disguising Imperfections

A lucky few are blessed with flawless, radiant skin. For those not quite so lucky, there's redness, scarring, blemishes, discolouration and everything between. It's not just makeup that we can turn to in troubled times, but skincare products that can really force our beauty products to go that extra mile. Putting together a decent skincare routine is not only beneficial for the short term, but will have you looking younger in the long term. Here are my top tips for disguising imperfections.

No matter what your goal, a good cleansing routine is the first thing to address when skin goes awry. Dry, oily, sensitive? There are plenty of high quality cleansers on the market targeting a specific skin condition that you can pair with other products in order to tailor a regime that covers all bases. Pai's Gentle Hydrating Cleanser is a good all round cleanser: a heavenly mix of Camellia and Rose that removes impurities while keeping your skins natural oils in tact. It's organic, vegan and cruelty free and comes with a muslin cloth for easy removal.

For large pores and outbreaks, a mask of facial peel can be the ideal solution for smooth, HD-ready skin. For the price, Soap & Glory The Fab Pore Facial Peel can't be beaten! Targeted at oily skin, this 15 minute wonder peel sorts out a multitude of problems in no time. Don't despair if you skin is on the drier side, as this peel can be used sparingly on areas that truly need help rather than all over.

If you don't use toner, you should start. It stimulates the moisturising process of the skin, making sure your products go that bit further, resulting in using less of it. Dr. Hauschka's Facial Toner is a real treat for the skin as it contains both Anthyllis and Witch Hazel that improve and maintain the elasticity of the skin. This glorious golden toner also regulates the skins production of oil, which makes it perfect for those suffering with their skin type. This handy bottle also comes with a spray pump, which is ideal to mist directly onto the face!

Recently I've noticed my moisturiser isn't quite doing it's job, so I went on the hunt for something new. After extensive research a little tube of Hydraluron came into my possession and hasn't left my vanity dresser since. The marvel that is Hydraluron takes the concept of injectable hydration and adapts it into gel form, specifically targeted at those of us not quite ready to take the plunge into cosmetic treatments. Containing red marine algae (bear with me) and hyaluronic acid (I know what you're thinking) this pint-sized moisture booster increases your blood circulation, resulting in intensely hydrated and improved skin. Just think about it: a pre-moisturiser gel that can plump up your skin, add moisture and improve the quality of your skin? It's not wonder it's become such a cult product.

Dermalex's Rosacea & Couperose formula is a moisturiser that makes any reddened skin or visible spider veins cower. This addresses both the prevention and reduction of symptoms and alleviates instantly. I've been using it on a tiny cluster of spider veins along my right cheek that have been getting better with regular use; the green pigment counteracts with the redness and boosts self-confidence no end.

Moving on to makeup that covers any problem areas, Dr. Jart+ Regenerating Beauty Balm has impressive coverage for redness and spots. For a BB Cream it's unrivalled when it comes to staying put, making the perfect base for any of your skin worries as it feels lighter than a foundation. For angry, fresh scars as well as visible veins, a few clicks of the GOSH Click'n Conceal Anti Redness Concealer is a miracle worker. Having used a few green based concealers, this is the only one that doesn't leave you looking like The Hulk while you're covering up pesky blemishes. To negate any unnecessary green tinge, going over it with Maybelline Super Stay 24HR Concealer gives you the perfect concealer combo. I barely notice my spider veins and red cheeks when I use them together.

The key to disguising your imperfections lies in a mixture of skincare and makeup. Don't be fooled by the promises of companies out to make a quick buck - you need products that will work for you. Experiment, mix makeup together, combine a two moisturisers to create your perfect moisture surge but most of all, don't settle when you know you can feel good with just a few changes of routine.

  3. I have recently started a more regimented skincare routine with the Clinique 3 step system and really noticed a difference. It really does pay to spend more time in the morning on my skin as my makeup looks SO much better. Still looking for the perfect solution to my under-eye circles though!
