The Capsule Makeup Bag

We're always after that capsule wardrobe, the one with clothes that look good all year round and mean you don't break the bank come the new season. Having that pair of jeans that makes you feel wonderful and a crisp white shirt that goes with everything just makes us feel good. So why don't we do the same with our makeup? We should have a staple set of around 10 products that do for us what our wardrobes does. Here's a quick round up of makeup products I use all year round and tips for what to look for in a product.

The Base

The dream foundation is all any girl asks for, but as it's difficult to find keeping a few products that work for you in rotation is handy. As the seasons can have an impact on our skin it's good to keep in mind that your skin type may change too. This is why it's a good idea to pick a light, dewy foundation that's pliable enough to work all year round. Revlon's Nearly Naked range has a wonderfully resilient liquid foundation that lends well to being used both in cold and warmer months (when mixed with a hint of cream bronzer.) If you're feeling like a lighter base for those good skin days, packing a good BB or CC cream will give you the coverage you need with very little effort. I've been loving the Maxfactor CC Cream recently - it usually requires just a swipe on the cheeks and any problems areas, and you're good to go!

I'm not one for high-end concealers; I feel you can nab a really good product from the high street that match up to the expensive ones. Everyone in the blogging universe has used, or at least heard of, Collection's Lasting Perfection Concealer: it had been a staple of mine for years and a definite on the repurchase list. However, having branched out a bit further Maybelline's Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer does what Collection 2000's offering does and more. A little of this dabbed under the eyes and the tops of the cheeks gives a radiant glowed that has yet to be equaled.

If a dewy complexion isn't for you, a brief dusting of MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural will mattify and hide any further imperfections. A little goes a long way with this powder, so make sure you're not going overboard!

The Cheeks

Whether you're a bronzer person or not, it's always an essential part of any decent makeup bag. It's great for a sun kissed glow and natural contouring but isn't the easiest product to master! MAC's Sun Dipped Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder is the perfect tool for every purpose. A rich golden bronze with a the smallest hint of sparkle that doesn't show up on the skin but proves to reflect light making the glow look natural. A quick buff of this along the cheekbones and worked up into the temples, down the nose, along the jaw and hairline will give perk up your face and really draw out your best features.

Now for a pop of colour; enter NARS Orgasm Blush, a cult classic for a reason. A true peachy pink with flecks of gold that never fails to impress. Finely milled, highly pigmented and above all natural, this is a blush to blush over and should take up permanent residence in your makeup bag. If the price tag is a little too much, Dainty Doll do an impressive dupe for a fraction of the price.

The Eyes

Moving on the the eyes, a colour that never fails to work for all seasons and all skin types, Maybelline's Color Tattoo 24hr Gel-Cream Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze. Any bronze, earthy colour that lends itself well to the natural side with an extra kick, is going to be the ideal companion to perking up tired eyes. This particular shade is long wearing, creamy, light and subtle but is wonderfully build-able, turning a day look into a nighttime look in no time.

Any girl worth her salt has an eyeliner or two stashed away. Kohl, gel, liquid; pencil, pot, tube. It doesn't matter what product you prefer, as long as you find a nice soft black that stands the test of time and doesn't fade to grey. Clinique's Quickliner for Eyes Intense Black that doesn't budge and one of the easiest to apply as the formula doesn't tend to tug at the skin on the eye.

A solid, trusty mascara is the one thing I can't live without and I've found a gem in Maybelline's The Rocket Volum' Express. Want thick, full and extended lashes? Look no further. The brush gets right into the lash line with a little bit of a wiggle and slides over each and every lash. The only thing to be mindful of is that the formula isn't great when built up over several layers.

The Lips

To finish, a slick of much needed colour to the lips is essential. Not everyone suits pink, or even coral, but a good basic red works for fair and dark alike. Lipstick can be drying, but there are formulations out there to insert moisture back into the lips while retaining a strong colour pop. Clinique Chubby Sticks are a prime example of moisturising lip colour, but more on the tint side of the spectrum. The new Intense range heralds a multitude of highly pigmented wonders to add to your collection, but Heftiest Hibiscus is a strong slightly orangey red that just works for everyone. It's perfect for daytime at the office, an evening dinner... But most of all, it's reached for time and time again.

Those are my must-have products that see me through the seasons. What are yours?
