Ever wondered what Barbie looks like without makeup?

Wonder no more, as this image was definitely created to address that point. A graphic designer decided to strip Barbie of all her slap, picturing the iconic doll as if she's just emerged from her slumber: no mascara or concealer in sight. Gone are the perfectly formed lips, the immaculate eyeshadow and stuck-on lashes, in favour of a tired, saggy and spotty complexion. Barbie even wears braces on her slightly yellowing teeth, because nobody is born with gnashers that perfect. Can you imagine if girls were to play with dolls that look like this, instead of the unrealistic figures I adored as an 8 year old? Do we need to bring Barbie into 2013, or leave her where she is as an aspirational (yet unrealistic) beauty icon? Are we reading into this too much, a bit of harmless fun, or does this bring to life a much harder-hitting discussion... I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. OMG! I would love girls to have a look at this picture and stop fighting with theirselves for not looking as gorgeous as Barbie!

  3. I think it's interesting but there isn't anything un realistic about the way barbies face looks. We all love make up and most women wear it to enhance what we have. Barbie wearing a little bit of make up makes her a little aspirational.

Seeing Barbie without makeup is so wierd aha!

  4. I'd love to know her secrets on disguising her bags that much haha. Personally I think there is too much social politics put onto Barbie & I think it would be more beneficial to stop photoshopping every female in a magazine- young girls surrounded by those unmasked images are more likely to accept real flaws than if given a non pretty doll to play with. Thats not to say that they shouldn't have made this, just that I feel that the effort is concentrated in the wrong area.

  10. WOAH, thats crazy! I have no idea what is right and wrong in regards to which Barbie should be more 'out there'. However, it really does portray the message that even Barbie isn't a representation of a 'real' woman these days which is quite sad xx

  11. Interesting. Perhaps it is unrealistic for girls to play with Barbie dolls, but I think we're all probably far more influenced by the people we see in magazines, films and on television than we are by a doll with what we know is an impossibly tiny waist.
