Clinique Chubby Sticks for Eyes

Every so often a product is so hyped up, that when it actually hits stores you feel obliged to fall in love with it. This is how I feel about Clinique's Chubby Sticks for Eyes; they finally launch onto counters this month after a wait that seems longer than London getting to the Olympic opening ceremony. I'm a huge fan of the original Chubby Stick and I've blogged about it many times before, even awarding it the accolade of my favourite makeup launch of 2011. I love the chunkiness of the design, the softness of the colour and the comfort it brings my lips - basically, it's just a little bit awesome. When I heard that Clinique were extending the line to include eyeshadows I couldn't wait to see how they'd transfer the qualities over; after all, a moisturising and delicate lip tint isn't what I normally look for in an eye colour. The new sticks come in twelve different shades, covering a pretty neutral spectrum of browns and purple-blues, and claim to be long-lasting as well as smudge resistant. With shades that include Mighty Moss and Bountiful beige, I'm not too fussed about them staying put all day (they do it pretty well without too much hassle mind,) but I'm keen to see how this quality transfers to darker shades if and when they're launched. The bullet contains Vitamin E to 'soothe the eye area' too, which is quite a unique benefit and one that brings to life the Chubby Stick mantra in a slightly different way. It does feel very comfortable on the eye and my lids don't stick or feel like I'm wearing heavy makeup, which is often a problem that creamy eyeshadows bring. Although the whole point of the product is that it's in the format of a stick to aid application, the bullet isn't pointed enough to get any real accuracy - although it's easy enough to smooth over the eye socket, when it comes to the lash line and around the lower lid it's another story. I really struggled creating an accurate look or a smokey eye with this, which for me was what I was looking forward to. The result is also very sheer, looking very pigmented when swatched onto skin but transforming into a transluscent tint when applied to the lid; you need to build up quite a few layers to get the colour working the way you'd want, which again kind of defeats the purpose. I was so looking forward to these products, but just find myself a little dissappointed with the outcome - I didn't find them easy to use, the colour spectrum was a bit too 'blah', the intensity of the shades was weak and the bullet just started getting on my nerves! I am growing to love the olive shade I have, using it to create a very subtle hint of colour around the eye on 'down days', but I feel a bit like I've cheated on Chubby Stick with his younger brother and found the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Have you tried the Chubby Sticks? What do you think of the new addition?

Available now in store and online priced £16.00 each.

  2. Bah, these sounds like a bit more bother than they're worth :( Such a shame!

Might try the topshop ones instead!

  3. I'm really liking my chubby eye stick! I like that you don't have to put your finger in a pot to apply (like other cream shadows) although the consistency is more solid compared to other cream ones. Agree that you do have to add a couple of layers but I find this easy to do with the rounded tip and just use my middle finger to blend into the socket.

  4. It was really interesting to read your review.

What a shame clinique have been a little greedy and slapped chubby stick on a product that at best is ill conceived...

Here's my open letter to Clinique http://www.fabtips.co.uk/2013/02/an-open-letter-to-clinique-re-chubby-sticks-for-eyes/
