The alternative nail trends

I've seen so many nail trends pop up on the internet, in magazines and on the high street recently, some of which I really don't understand the appeal of. Some of the trends seem to be creative ways of making more money for brands by telling everyone it's cool to have fluff, blobs or dimples on their nails, when realistically you can create all these 'trends' at home for absolutely no money at all. Here are my five top alternative nail trends, and how to achieve them, to start 2013 off in style.*

*Take with a massive pinch of salt.

1. The leather effect nail
If you want to look like your nails have turned to leather (because dead animal skin is so hot right now) then simply paint your talons in a dark colour late at night. Get in your pyjamas when they're still on the soggy side, and get a good nights sleep - when you awake your nails will be adorned with all kinds of dents and patterns from your bed sheets. Voila, you are soooooo 2013.

2. The fur effect nail
Now this is truly innovative so you'll need a bit of practice to get it right. Find a room you like the colour of and choose a nail polish that matches the hue of the carpet. Apply two coats of the chosen colour and when your nails are still tacky to the touch, wipe them across the carpet to pick up all the excess fluff. Practice makes perfect; you may get a few dog hairs on there the first time around.

3. The statement nail
A super easy look to create, the statement nail takes only a few minutes to complete. Take a strong colour that's season appropriate (why not try a dark red for winter) and paint all but your wedding ring finger. By simply 'forgetting' one digit you are totally rocking a super simple, yet effective nail art look. Your friends will be well jel.

4. The reverse manicure
The idea of this is to have dark nails and pale tips. It's like the traditional french manicure, but with a twist. For this look it's best to paint nails with one of those annoying polishes that chip as soon as you apply - I can highly recommend Chanel for this purpose. Apply two coats and wait to fully dry. Then all you have to do is type, do the washing up or pull up your tights, and the tips of your nails will be free from polish in no time.

5. The caviar effect nail
If you're not into leather or fluff, then this more extravagant trend may be right up your street. Inspired by fish eggs (who wouldn't want fish eggs on their nails?) this trend is something quite spectacular. There's no need to buy expensive beads, all you have to do is ask your mum for the cake decorating tin and get to work. Once you've painted your nails in a pale colour to bring out the shade variety of the decorations, pour hundreds and thousands over your digits and leave to set. The benefit of this is that when you bite your nails, they taste good too.

If you do try any of these at home then make sure you share your pictures - I'd love to see your creativity. (Mind you, I'm not responsible for any messes you make or you getting in trouble with your parents/housemate/boyfriend.) What trends are you rocking for 2013?

I'm not really into the nail trends that are out at the moment. If I'm honest, the only one I do like is the statement nail trend. All the rest just look tacky and awful in my opinion!
