Hyper Japan 2012

This weekend I was invited down to Earls Court to check out the biggest Japanese culture event in the UK - Hyper Japan. Now I like to eat wasabi peas and Pocky sticks, enjoy wandering through China Town to stocking up on strange desserts and I've read a couple of comics in my time, but by no means am I a devotee to Japanese culture. It's probably for that reason that I was quite surprised to be on the tube with a bunch of girls dressed like dolls and their accompanying superhero boyfriends. Hyper Japan is definitely out of this world and makes you feel like you've walked right into a comic strip or computer game. Part of the fun is clearly dressing up in doll-like dress, wearing pastel coloured wigs, carrying a sword and posing for pictures - it's loads of fun, even though I had absolutely no clue what was going on. There's everything you can imagine at the event, from fashion to food, computer games to seminars on sushi, so if you even have a vague interest in Japanese culture then this is the place to be. Although some of the things on sale are ludicrously expensive, there are lots of bargains to be had too... Especially if you're into tacky, fun jewellery and accessories! I wandered around and saw everything from a guy dressed as Belle from Beauty and the Beast, to rows of kids playing card games with eachother, and actually had a blast. The only disappointment for me was the set up of the event itself; I go to a lot of exhibitions at Earls Court and normally there's a bit of carpet and some homely furnishings, but the whole show was in a big concrete shell that made it feel a bit empty and lost. That aside, this is definitely a great place to go if you're after some inspiration or just a bit of shopping... The whole way round I couldn't stop singing "I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so." Have you been to Hyper Japan? What did you love most?

  1. It actually looks like accessory heaven (not sure what that says about my personal taste..!) xx

  2. Gorgeous products from Japan! I love their creativity and bright colours
