Soulmate Food Detox

My eating habits are pretty appalling. I eat on the go, when I can and whatever is within easy reach. I eat too late, often skip meals and most dinners consist of canapes or pub food. This is all well and good for a certain amount of time, but every so often I really start to feel it - in my sleeping, my energy levels and generally the state of my skin. The Soulmate food detox came along at just the right time and allowed me to do a little detox for a week before Reading Festival (probably not the best idea in retrospect!) I've done detox plans before, but Soulmate use a Harley Street nutritionist and chef to prepare well balanced meals that are delivered to your door every other day. The main difference between this plan and the others I've tried is the brilliant food that it involves. If you thought a detox or diet meant eating cardboard and feeling constantly hungry, then Soulmate completely redefines the concept and enables you to really enjoy your food, without feeling like you're missing out on anything at all.

I undertook a six day challenge and received my first box overnight so it was waiting for me first thing in the morning. When I first found out this was how the food was delivered I was a little bit dubious; delivering a box with two days worth of grub between midnight and 9am and leaving it outside the front door of my block of flats? It was actually fine, waiting for me every morning without a problem. All the food is prepared fresh so it arrives surrounded by ice packs, keeping it cool enough overnight so that it's still tasty in the morning. Each day you get breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a mid-morning and afternoon snack to keep you going. The plan is designed to keep your metobolism ticking over all day, eating little and often so you don't feel hungry - this was the biggest change for me and really helped to prevent that empty feeling in my stomach. I normally don't snack (I'm pretty sure biscuits don't count!) so I did have to remember to eat between meals, which then meant I wasn't hungry at all by the time the full meal was due.

The food itself was actually delicious. I loved the variety and the tastiness of every single thing that I was munching on. Breakfast was anything from a smoothie, to fruit, to muesli, to salmon, to pepper omlettes. Lunch included salads, fresh chicken, soups and lots of beans - proper meals though, not just a bunch of lettuce leaves in a pot. Afternoon snacks included blueberry muffins, dip and crackers, sweet potato dippers and even some beautiful gingerbread bites. Dinner consisted of everything from thai curry, to paella, stew and even fajitas. As you can tell, at no point did I actually feel like I was on a diet at all - it just felt like I was eating really well and totally enjoying the food. Although weight loss wasn't my objective at all, I naturally shed a few pounds and felt a little better after a few days; other detoxes have been more extreme and made me feel much more energised, but this subtly made a difference and helped me to re-asses my habits.

If, like me, you really struggle with eating regularly and end up snacking in the pub, then a service like this could really help to sort you out. It makes you think about what you're putting in your body and aids detoxing in lots of different ways - no caffeine or alcohol is allowed, so for over two weeks I stayed away from tea and coffee (alcohol is a whole other issue) which really helped me to realise I was a little bit addicted. This plan is around £30 a day, which when you calculate the amount you'd spend on three meals and two snacks isn't a lot at all. I easily spend that much on rubbish food, so I'd quite happily part with the same amount to ensure I was eating in a much healthier way. I'm all for detoxes, especially when they're this tasty and no effort is involved!
