Guest Post: Tantastic Sienna X

Blessed with a skin tone that makes Casper the ghost look like an extra from Gypsy Weddings, I first experimented with fake tan as a teenager.  Determined to turn my pasty complexion a dazzling Amazonian bronze, I toddled into Boots and purchased the first can of budget spray I could lay my paws on.  A haphazard slathering and several hours of development time later I looked hideous. Like the streaky love child of Donatella Versace and Frosty the Snowman. Ever since this incident (and a similar disaster involving a bottle of peroxide home hair dye) I’ve left both tans and hair colourings to the professionals. It’s safer for all involved. And though I’m more content with my wallpaper English Rose pallor these days, a spray tan is still a must for special occasions.

Last week I tried the Sienna X spray tan for the first time and it’s been my favourite product to date. After applying barrier cream to the necessary bits, the therapist sprayed my whole body in less than 10 minutes. The formula dries within minutes and doesn’t have the ‘sticky’ feel you get with some products. You can put loose clothing back on straight away but if you don’t mind scuttling round in your pants for a while, I’d recommend waiting before getting dressed. (You can always pop on a dressing gown if full frontal isn’t your bag.) In salons you should be able to choose the strength of tan and the number of applications you want. Assuming you’re not desperate to appear in the next series of TOWIE, less is always more. If you have fair skin that doesn’t tan particularly easily go for one layer of the lightest shade. If you’re olive skinned you can stand to go a shade darker but try to resist the darkest tones. Much like drinking on a school night it might *seem* like good idea at the time, but by the morning you’ll be in all kinds of crisis.

Like other spray tans, the final results are visible after eight hours of development and a shower. Mimicking a natural ‘two weeks in Spain’ look, it fades gradually with a little help from your exfoliator. Results last around 7-10 days, though apparently you can make the tan last longer if you avoid showering. (Personally I’d go with clean and pale over brown and potent but hey, to each their own.) I paid £20 for professional application but prices are generally higher in London. Therapists all across the UK are offering Sienna X tan and you can check stockists here. The products, which are all paraben, alcohol and cruelty free, can also be purchased online, with prices starting at £12.95 for the instant bronzing gel.

  1. Your tan looks really natural, I would never have guessed that it was faked,
