The Book of Dreams

The whole hoo-ha over Urban Decay's Book Of Shadows has passed me by in a blur. I'd never seen one with my own eyes or really understood why ladies of the blogging world were going gaga over a pretty packaged box of makeup... Until I was sent one to have a look at myself. The forth book of shadows is something of a statement - this isn't just another palette or music box, this is a whole experience. When you open it for the first time you're greeted with a butterfly arrangement that reminds me of the pop-up books we had as a child; it's like opening up a makeup box from Alice in Wonderland!

The Book Of Shadows Volume IV contains 16 eyeshadows, all very wearable and interchangeable. You could literally create endless looks with the shadows, from neutral day colours, to sassy smouldering Saturday night eyes and a little streak of colour in between. As expected, all the pigments of the shadows are strong and the formula easy to blend and work with. The pans themselves aren't very big, but then when did you ever finish an eyeshadow before getting bored of it?

Within the box is also a 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, a travel-size Eyeshadow Primer Potion and a travel-size Supercurl Curling Mascara, so you can complete your look without a care in the world. This palette is supposed to be like dipping a toe in the pool of Urban Decay, rather than loading you with loads of products you may not like. I love the fact that you can try out some iconic products without forking out for the full sized ones, whilst it's all packaged in an exciting and intriguing way. Not only do you get little products, but you also get a card with five QR codes linking through to five exclusive 'how to' videos that have been created exclusively for the collection.

The videos are about five minutes long and show you exactly how to create looks using the products provided, as well as including helpful tips and tricks. The box even includes a place to put your phone, next to the mirror, so you can watch and play at the same time. To top it all off, the collection even comes with a mini speaker which plugs into your phone so you can play music or just increase the volume of the tutorials. I'm amazed at how much thought and detail has gone into this little box of treasures; it's not just another box of eyeshadows, but a true makeup experience that puts the fun back into colour. This would make such a great gift for someone, as well as a brilliantly indulgent treat for yourself. Although it doesn't come cheap at £46, I thoroughly believe it's worth it, not only with the fab products you get, but the experience you have using it.

  1. I'm not into stuff like this (I look like a bit of a tranny with eyeshadow on) but purely from an aesthetic point of view it looks really really pretty :-)
