Perfect Slumber

If you'd have told me a few months ago that I'd be sleeping on a silk pillowcase for the benefit of my hair or skin I'd have told you that I'm neither a Princess or a pensioner. Fast forward a few months and here we are, chatting about sleeping on said pillowcase. I was given a Silk Perfect case back in November to try and told that using it could really improve the condition of your skin, prevent wrinkles, smooth your hair, make the night products you use more effective... I have to admit I didn't think it would do much, but I gave it a whirl anyway in the name of research for you lovely lot!

This is what Silk Perfect have to say: "Sleeping on the rough fibres of traditional cotton, linen or polyester pillowcases can cause facial creases which, in the long term, contribute to the formation of lines and wrinkles. These fabrics can also wick away moisture from the skin and wipe away night creams, limiting their effect.... Silk is exceptionally smooth on a microscopic level which helps to avoid friction of the hair shaft, leaving your locks looking glossy and smooth from the moment you wake. Silk is made up of strings of amino acid which has the same ph level as your skin. These proteins help to prevent frizzing and split ends. Silk reduces the loss of natural hair oils and moisture by preventing osmosis, leaving its natural shine intact."

So that's the science behind it and it makes a very convincing case - no pun intended. To start with it felt really strange sleeping on a silky pillowcase rather than my usual cotton ones, but I found it was much more cooling and calming which followed through to the morning when I awoke feeling a bit fresher than normal. After a month or so of use I can't say I've noticed any difference in my skin, but it has made a difference to my hair... rather than waking up with a bird's nest on my head I now have a respectable 'do that wouldn't look to awful if the postie came round early. My hair is smoother and doesn't look or feel like I've been rolling around on it all night, although it doesn't mean I wake up looking as fresh as a daisy... it's going to take more than a pillow case to manage that!

The pillowcases from Silk Perfect cost around £20 for two (on a 'buy one get one free') and come with a cotton underside so they don't slip and slide all over the place as you sleep. Apparently this is the 'beauty secret of the stars' and Lauren Conrad (you know, her off The Hills) swears by them. I've heard a lot of other bloggers say they've made a real difference to their skin too, so I think if you're after a new gadget to start 2011 off with then give this a whirl. It won't work miracles but it could turn back the clock to 2010 at least!

  1. I used to have silk bedding before I moved to the UK because it was far too hot for cotton, duvets and blankets. I don't remember them making much of a difference but I suppose I wasn't really paying attention. Might be worth a shot!

  2. I think it must depend on your skin/hair type as it seems to make a huge difference for some people and not for others. Worth a shot if you have problems!
